Day 10- Orange Theory Fitness- “good things come to those who sweat”

Today’s first – morning group fitness class at Orange Theory Fitness, Capitola.  I have seen these fitness centers all over, but never knew the concept behind them.  Their method boils down to heart rate based interval training.  Backed by the science of Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (or EPOC), Orangetheory’s heart rate monitored training is designed to maintain a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy. This is commonly known as the ‘afterburn’, work for 1 hr- keep burning for the next 36.

Today’s First – Argentine Tango at the Bayview Hotel

Details:
Every Monday from 6:30pm – 9:30pm

$5-10.00 donation

Location: The Bay View Hotel-GG Restaurant
8041 Soquel Dr
Aptos, CA

What fun! Open dance in a historic hotel – friendly atmosphere, even towards a complete beginner. Great way to kick off the week.  This style of dance was brand new to me, I felt grateful to Dustin (older gent making his way from Vancouver to Phoenix, joining tango meet ups along the way!) for showing me the basics.

Day 8- electronic upright bass

Today’s first: Attempt to play the EUB!  Very challenging, didn’t even know this instrument existed until I saw it at my friend’s house.  I opted to learn to pluck a scale (Gmajor) and then picked up the bow to play the strings.. brand new at this, bear with me!

What is it? The electric upright bass (abbreviated EUB) is an electronically amplified version of the double bass that has a minimal or ‘skeleton’ body, which greatly reduces the size and weight of the instrument. The EUB retains enough of the features of the double bass so that double bass players are comfortable performing on it. While the EUB retains some of the tonal characteristics of the double bass, its electrically amplified nature also gives it its own unique sound.

Top nob: master volume, Bottom nob: Treble, switch: up for arco, down for pizzicato

(arco – bow to be used, pizzicato – plucking with fingers)

There are no frets, but there are dots (pictured on the right).

With bow – pretty wild sustain!

Day 7 – Movement to be moved

Fly, Fly, Fast, Grow do not stop
Do not be afraid to see all
A masterful shape shifter adapts
to all circumstances and situations
with magic, speed and agility.

Today’s First: Ecstatic Dance at the 418 project perfoming arts center.

Ecstatic Dance is “a unique expression of global movement”.  The guidelines are as follows: Move how you want. Respect the space and the people in it.

NO booze, shoes, talking, perfume.

YES sacredness, playfulness, community

Video is solely audio to respect ‘no photography’ policy of the ED community.. it will give you a taste of the DJ’s style.  While this type of music is not what I’d typically be playing in my car, it sure provided the right beats to get into a trance like, transformative space.  Given the welcoming environment and smiles from the community, I found it easy to relax into experience and let my body be moved by the music.  90% of the songs had no lyrics and it was the beats allowed for a primal, movement meditation.

At the front of the room there was an altar with medicine cards we could go up and pick from, along with a book that knowledged us the meaning of the card we picked.  Dragonfly was the card that appeared in my hands and the symbolism was quite on par with my life story right now.. gotta love those winks from above.

DRAGONFLY = THE TRANSFORMER

Fly, Fly, Fast, Grow do not stop
Do not be afraid to see all
A masterful shape shifter adapts
to all circumstances and situations
with magic, speed and agility.

Day 6: Majestic Manresa – Barefoot Beach Run

Today’s first: Barefoot beach run on Manresa State Beach before work

Sunshine, salty air, western sandpipers – What a glorious way to start the day, my goodness. Especially after all the rain we have had here in NorCal!

Easy 6 minute drive off of Highway 1 (exit San Andreas Rd if heading South from Aptos, exit Mar Monte if heading North from Monterey area)

Address to google: 1445 San Andreas Rd, Watsonville, CA 95076

This beach was glorious, felt like I was back in Hawaii with the coastal cliffs on one side and waves on the other..

Day 5 – Local Town’s History Museum

“To be wealthy was to be able to give, not to have”

Today’s first was an unexpected find on the way home from work (and good thing because I had failed miserably at planning today’s blog post!).  Funny how when you pause and really look around at the present moment in detail you may find what you need is right under your nose.

DAY 5 – APTOS HISTORY MUSEUM VISIT

It was wild, and inspiring, to read about the Ohlone tribe of Native Americans that migrated to Aptos 2,500- 3,000 years ago.  Central California had the densest Indian population anywhere north of Mexico before the coming of the Spaniards.  Over 10K people lived in the coastal area between Point Sur and the San Francisco Bay.  The Ohlone people belonged to 40 different groups, each with its own chief.  They spoke 8-12 different languages that were related but still so distinct that often those living only 20 miles apart could not understand one another!

“If we compare the Ohlone to other hunter-gathering people, they were among the most successful in the world.  They had a communal society where everything was shared. They valued generosity. “To be wealthy was to be able to give, not to have”. The Ohlone achieved something quite rare in human history: a way of life that gave them relative peace and stability, not for just a few generations but for thousands of years. “

They loved fine beadwork, feathery and basketry.. their baskets are some of the finest and rarest in the world.

Here are Ohlone Arrowheads (aka points) that were found in Rio Del Mar Beach Flats in the 1970s

On a separate wall of the museum I found a replica of John J. Montgomery’s 3-1/2 foot research prototype used in 1896 to test his theories of flight. Covered with pink silk, it was called “Pink Maiden” and was flown off the railroad trestle at LaSelva Beach.  It became the design of the full size glider piloted by Daniel J. Maloney in 1905.

Lastly, I learned the correct name for the tall, grass-like plants that grow in wet marshy areas.  They are found throughout the world and are common here in California, wherever there is freshwater marsh. TULES, sometimes called bullrushes, is what they are called.(pic is at the start of the blog, to the right)

Day 4 -What’s life without a lil’ Mystery?!

Today’s First – Visit to the Mystery Spot with Em-J and Alexi Glickman (newlyweds, amazing surfers, musicians, friends and all around magical human beings..you know, they got that mojo)

The MYSTERY SPOT is “a gravitational anomaly” located in the redwood forests just outside of Santa Cruz, California.

Day 3 – Sweet Tooth Satisfaction!

Today’s first was effortless.. perfect for a rainy day.  Ventured into the Buttery Bakery for the first time and bought a Pecan Sandy, suggested by the lovely barista, Richard (seen in pic).  Hand made deliciousness.  Only needed 1/2 it was so rich, made a street corner stranger pretty happy when I paid the second half forward.. sharing is caring 🙂

About the Bakery:

“Everything we serve at The Buttery is made here—Except for the bread, which is made off-site by Janet’s husband’s company, Golden Sheaf. We use homemade recipes scaled up to serve our many customers. We use all of the wonderful ingredients that the Central Coast has to offer and always use local sources when available. Santa Cruzans appreciate good food made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. A successful business depends on an appreciative audience. It is a symbiotic relationship and we strive to never lose sight of our relationship with the people we serve.”

Also came across a wonderful pictured quote today:

Day 1 of 100 Day Challenge

Coming into 2017 with steady balance on rocky ground!  First challenge this go around is to stand on a stability ball.  My 2017 resolution is to do one new thing a day for 100 days straight. I did this in 2014 and soaked in some of the best experiences (and most amazing smiles with friends!) of my life. Going to attempt the challenge once more, life is short and there is too much goodness out there to explore! More importantly, I found that when I focused my attention on learning and growing, I was able to get a better grasp on my not so healthy habits. Tons of natural highs out there to be had…

So, today I began the challenge with a physical one, something I have been working on for the past few weeks. Today the mission to stand on a stability ball was accomplished. Here is the video. Below are a few tips..

**REMEMBER LIKE ANY NEW FEAT, THIS TAKES PRACTICE! I PROMISE WITH JUST A COUPLE OF MINUTES A DAY YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF PROGRESS QUICKLY. KEEP AT IT AND DON’T QUIT!!**

1. Start with an TRIANGLE – Dominant hand at the top, dominant foot at one bottom and non dominant hand at the other bottom.
2. Begin the process by taking your non domiant knee next to the non dominant hand and work your way to having 1 knee and 1 foot on the ball
3. Keep your core STRONG, shoulders relaxed and gaze at the ground in front of the ball rather than looking on the ball.
4. Shift to only having your fingertips on the ball as you switch out your knee for your foot.
5. You are now on 2 feet and your finger tips
6. Drop weight into your sit bones like you are doing a deep squat
7. BREATHE!! Slowly start to stand, keeping a soft bend in the knees to adapt to change in balance.
8. SMILE!! YOU ROCKED IT! 😊
